Next Level Leadership Coaching

How You Can Become A Leader People Want To Follow

Have you ever noticed how some people seem to attract followers? While others fail to attract anyone or, if ever put in a management position, must resort to asserting their authority, making demands or even threats (implied or expressed) to get people to do what they want? Think of the best teacher you ever had. Did you notice how effortless it seemed for them to get kids to do what they wanted--how the kids seemed eager to do it? Almost every other teacher struggled, having to cajole or threaten kids just to get them to sit down and be quiet. Have you ever wondered what the difference was? What was the exact quality the good teacher possessed?

Fast forward to today. You need to expand as a leader. Maybe you’re now in charge of a new team or you are being groomed for the next level of leadership; maybe you need to create alignment with a team around a major change initiative or a recent merger; or maybe you’ve read the research on how culture-building creates massive economic value and you want that in your own domain. Whatever the reason, you see an opportunity to lead and feel called to expand yourself as a leader.

Looking for an executive coach? Take advantage of our offer to experience a free exploratory coaching session.

We are giving away 10 coaching sessions to qualified applicants. You will receive a 60-minute coaching session, a $600 value, PLUS a personalized summary called, “Next Level Leadership Blueprint,” a custom leadership learning agenda you will create during the session, a $497 value.

One Hour of Coaching with Simon: $600 value

Total value: $1097

What you will receive:

  • A leadership learning agenda that identifies personal outcomes, breakthroughs, challenges and the key skills you will need to strengthen to go to the next level.

Are you sure you have the secret sauce?

Are you able to inspire the people around you to offer their best consistently and willingly—even eagerly?  If you’re not sure you know what this essential ability is or whether you’ve got it—you aren’t alone.

From the place of “not knowing” what most managers do is to resort to the same tactics that bad teachers use—with the same mediocre results!

Is it any wonder that:

  • Among new executives hired from the outside, 58% fail within 18 months. – Harvard Business School Study, 20037 7 Watkins, M. (2003).
  • Among new management hires, 89% of new admit they don’t have the full set of skills or knowledge required to do their jobs. – Corporate Executive Board, 20058 8 Corporate Executive Board (2005).
  • Over 70% of CEOs do NOT believe they will have the talent needed to grow their organization in the near future. – PWC Trends in Human Capital, 20129 9 PWC (2012).
  • High-performers deliver 48% improved performance over average performers in highly complex jobs, but there is no clear path for how to become a “high-performer.” – Hunter, Schmidt, & Judiesch’s research across 59,000 jobs11 11 Hunter, J. E., Schmidt, F. L., & Judiesch, M. K. (1990).
  • Poor leaders create only 1/3 as much economic value as high-performing leaders (Zenger & Folkman’s Study of 30,000 Leaders, 2009).

Your current level of ability to lead isn’t your fault. They don’t teach this in business school. And you can’t learn it from reading books. And—as the results show—“on-the-job” training gives you experience, but not excellence in this area.

The mysterious ingredient that separates good leaders whose people love to follow them, from bad leaders that people resent is what I call context intelligence.

Learning how to incorporate it in your day-to-day management activities is what Next Level Leadership is all about.

Here’s what you’ll get out of
Next Level Leadership Coaching:

(Taken from actual comments of past clients)

Inner-Game Transformations.

  • "I am taking accountability for what is going on."
  • "I’m in touch with my deeper purpose, impact and legacy."
  • "I finally got in touch with my legacy. Today, I took the risk of telling my group what I want my legacy to be for the next 3 years in this position."
  • "I am a lot more curious and better at asking questions."
  • "People who report to me are starting to model some of my new behaviors."
  • "Before working with you, I thought I had to have the answers before I could speak to a group about things. Now, I am able ask questions that clarify and move the conversation forward."
  • "I’ve become more take charge and more bold, asserting an executive presence."

Outer-Game Transformations

  • "My team knows I’m listening and they trust they can have a conversation. They bring issues to me more often and more quickly. I’m more approachable."
  • "I have really grown in this past year in leading large groups. I can speak extemporaneously for 20 minutes from the heart. I am able to be transparent."
  • "We have shifted the conversation with the Executive Committee about my whole department from being a cost center to being strategic. I know how IT can help us make money."
  • "I was able to close a $60,000,000 deal."

Relationship Transformations

  • "I have the ear of the CEO. He said this year was a coming out for me and that he saw me showing up differently."
  • "The CEO said he was very pleased with my leadership of my division, that I had demonstrated my business acumen to executive leadership."
  • "People are buying into this new vision I have. It’s getting contagious, taking on a life of its own."
  • "My boss said he has confidence in what I’m doing. He trusts me. He said I don’t know how much influence I really have, and that I can use that influence more if I choose."

When I took the CIO role on, I was viewed as a technology guy trying to help the business.  Now I am known as business guy who knows how to leverage IT.   In my work with Simon, I was able to expand my executive presence, sharpen my skills and get focused on my leadership legacy.  As a result, I believe that I am at a different level now.  I have gained credibility and a seat at the table with the executive committee and I am excited about the future.

Biggest Obstacle to Growing as a Leader: YOU!

When it comes to blind spots, we all have 20-20 vision—for someone else’s. You, like everyone else, may deny their existence, especially to yourself. And you’ll defend yourself against attempts to point them out. Overcoming “default blind-spot resistance” requires an act of will, increased awareness and a lot of courage.

Because blind spots are unconscious, you see the collateral damage they cause, but may not know you caused it.   You may blame others for the damage to protect against loss of status that would proceed from admission that you caused it; as a result, subordinates avoid telling you the truth knowing that to do so risks a negative reaction from you. Afraid of inviting conflict and a career-limiting move, most prefer to keep quiet.

On the slim chance someone does speak up, you will most likely disagree, because you cannot see and honestly don’t know what they are talking about. Neither subordinates or your superiors in the hierarchy are likely to point out your blind spots to you, even if they suffer (emotionally, financially, personally) from the collateral damage you have caused.

The collateral damage from your blind spots, including your subordinates’ fear of becoming a dead messenger, may spread to the business itself. If so, your efforts may work directly against your own best interests and against the interests of the enterprise that employs you.

Warning! Bad Coaches

If you’re not sure, and don’t take this offer, that is of course your prerogative. But in fairness to you, I should warn you of a couple of risks you run if you go to other coaches. Most coaches cannot help you get Next Level Leadership.

This is for several reasons, including:

  • They don't understand what blind spots are or how to find them, communicate them or correct them;
  • They haven’t distinguished their own blind spots, so these become limitations in what they are able to teach you about yourself, reducing their value to you as a coach;
  • They stay on the surface, avoid depth and don’t challenge you;
  • Their coaching is one-dimensional, while Next Level Leadership Coaching is a multi-dimensional approach;
  • They focus too much on content not enough on context;
  • They suffer from simplistic either-or thinking and expect you to do the same;
  • They are unwilling or unable to hold you accountable;
  • Most coaches won’t tell you what they think because they’re afraid of being fired;

So, go ahead...
